O Antiphons

Discover the meaning behind the Advent antiphons, the medieval prayers prayed by the Church in preparation for Christ’s birth!

These Seven ancient prayers have been prayed by millions of Christians through the centuries, for at least thirteen hundred years.  They are invoking Christ in the seven Messianic titles. There are seven heart cries for Jesus to come anew into our life and each of them is preparing us to welcome the Christ child more completely during this blessed season.  Like a final crescendo, these O Antiphons are intoned during evening prayer on the seven days leading up to Christmas Eve.  Each night they form luminous book ends around Our Lady’s Magnificent, like seven prayers she prayed during her week long journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.  Each day you’ll receive in your e-mail the Antiphon of the day, we’ll do a kind of Lectio Devina on each one; Reading, reflecting, responding, and resting in these beautiful prayers.  So join us! Invite your friends and family, and on December 16-23, we will accompany the Holy Family on that ancient pilgrimage of light;  hearing, praying, and meditating, the O Antiphons like mile markers along the journey to Bethlehem.  We’ll see you there.
