Gregory Etzel assumed the position of Full-time Director of Cathedral Music/Associate Director of Divine Worship for Sacred Music on July 21, 2014. Previous to holding the Director of Sacred Music position, Greg began working for the Catholic Diocese of Peoria in 2008 as a Choir Section Leader, Cantor, Soloist and member of the Pontifical Brass. During his tenure at the Cathedral Greg also became Assistant Director for the Cathedral Chant School/Schola as well as Assistant Choir Director.
Prior to working at Saint Mary’s Cathedral Greg served in part-time positions in churches of various denominations in the Quad Cities area. While being born and raised in a Methodist church, he worked in Presbyterian and Episcopalian churches before settling at Saint Mary’s Cathedral. Both Greg and his wife, Laurel, converted to Catholicism after the birth of their oldest daughter.
Previous professional experiences include serving as Adjunct Faculty at Black Hawk Community College in Moline, IL; Knox College in Galesburg, IL; and Monmouth College, in Monmouth, IL. While attending graduate school Greg was an instructor of Record for undergraduate Group Voice Classes, Vocal Lessons, and served as Graduate Assistant for numerous classes including Basic Conducting. Most valuable was his experience of conducting a 60 member chorus for an entire academic year. Greg served as Stage Manager and Operations Manager for the Peoria Symphony Orchestra from 2012-2014.
As a performer Greg is currently a member of the Peoria Municipal Band and the River Valley Brass Quintet, both based in Peoria, IL. As a trombonist Greg served as Bass Trombone in the Knox Galesburg Symphony, appeared as Bass Trombone Soloist with the Peoria Municipal Band, and spent valuable time playing with a wide variety of regional dance bands, big bands, and combos. Aside from serving in the Cathedral Pontifical Brass at times, he has played in various churches, weddings, and other services in the region.
As a vocalist Greg has appeared several times as Vocal Soloist with the Peoria Municipal Band, soloist with the Knox Galesburg Symphony, with the Saint Martin’s Chamber Players Series, and the Lenten Noontime Concert Series in Rock Island, IL. Opera roles include Alcindoro/Benoit in La Boheme, Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata, The Jailer in Tosca, and Second Armored Man in The Magic Flute. These roles and additional Chorus roles were in association with City Opera of the Quad Cities, Opera Quad Cities, Opera Illinois, Sugar Creek Symphony and Song Festival, Western Michigan University, and Western Illinois University. Greg was also a member of the Nova Singers, a professional chorus based in Galesburg, IL.
Greg received a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance, with additional studies in Choral Conducting, from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. He completed his undergraduate studies in Vocal and Trombone Performance at Western Illinois University, in Macomb, IL; and Black Hawk Community College, in Moline, IL. Greg and his family are very excited to be contributing to the Cathedral Parish and the entire Diocese of Peoria on a full time basis in Music Ministry.
