Discerning: High SchoolAt this point, you are probably starting to think more seriously about what you want to do with your life. Different colleges, majors, and career paths are presenting themselves, and friends and family might suggest some options that they think you would be good at. Some people close to you may have even suggested that you might have a religious vocation. It can be tempting to brush this off, or to think that it couldn't possibly be you who is being called, but stop to think about it seriously. Are you finding that a normal career path strikes you as less than satisfying? Do you think that you might be happier serving others? Don't be worried that you are not good enough for the priesthood or religious life. No one is worthy, but we have all still been called by God to serve Him. You probably won't have all the talents necessary for the job at this point, so don't worry if the thought of counseling people in difficult situations or speaking in front of a crowd seems to be too difficult. You will be doing a lot of personal development in the next several years, and God will give you the gifts you need. If you feel conflicted about your options, that is because you are choosing between good things. All of the different vocations serve God and the Church in their own way. It isn't easy, but working your way through a tough decision can help to make you more sure of your choice. Think hard about what will make you truly happy, and make time to pray daily. Pray for the courage and generosity to respond to God's call, whatever that might be. Make sure to leave time for silence in your prayer. |
